Who am I? What is this? Why is it important?
Hello everyone! My name is Lauren Furu and I am a current senior at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA. Besides being a student, I am also one of the, roughly, 500 student-athletes at my university and play for our varsity Women’s Basketball program.
As I enter my fourth and final year of being a student-athlete I have faced late nights, early mornings and have had a much different college experience than the “normal” college student. Statistics show 7% of high school athletes will compete in a varsity athletic program in college and, while looking closer to home, roughly 20% of the students at Pacific Lutheran University participate in one or more of the nineteen offered varsity sports. With that being said, this blog will capture 100 days of a student-athlete as I document, explore and educate my daily experience and routines of being a student-athlete at PLU. But why? Being an athlete my entire life, I have such a strong passion for sports and the lifestyle around it. I love the energy of the crowd during big games. I love the friendships you make with your teammates and even rivals. I love the connectivity sports bring to the community, schools, family and friends. I love it all. I chose to document the “Life of a Student Athlete” as my 100 day project to show exactly what is it like, first-hand, being a student-athlete, especially at a Division III school where we are not awarded athletic scholarships for playing a sport. Yet, we are here for the love of the game.
I am super excited about starting this journey as it’s something I have never shared explicitly before yet it’s my life.
Feel free to share with friends, comment, ask questions along this 100 day journey.
And, like always, Go Lutes!
